They were so stylish, so well equipped and so lavished with tlc. And then I looked at what prices these owners could demand, and I wanted in!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.directholidaycottages.com\/cottage-properties\/1515-spring-cottage-luxury-cottage-close-to-malton-pickering-amp;-north-york-moors-.html\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">At the Start<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I knew my cottage had all the basics \u00e2\u20ac\u201c great location (in a quiet village), pretty from the outside (stone built) and inside it had many original features. \u00c2\u00a0I knew my plan wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t about ripping everything out and starting again (as I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t afford to do that). No more could I treat it as a hobby, as a nice-to-have second home.\u00c2\u00a0 I also had to believe in myself and banish any voices telling me otherwise \u00e2\u20ac\u201c\u00e2\u20ac\u0153your going to charge how much per week?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00c2\u00a0I had to adopt a guest-focussed mentality. Crucially, I also set myself a vision of what I wanted to achieve with my holiday home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.directholidaycottages.com\/cottage-blog\/files\/2015\/01\/Investing-Future-scrabble-8215661184-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-390\" title=\"Investing Future scrabble\" src=\"http:\/\/www.directholidaycottages.com\/cottage-blog\/files\/2015\/01\/Investing-Future-scrabble-8215661184-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/cottage-blog\/%3Ca%20href=%22https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/86530412@N02\/8215661184\/%22%3EStockMonkeys.com%3C\/a%3E%20via%20%3Ca%20href=%22http:\/\/photopin.com%22%3Ephotopin%3C\/a%3E%20%3Ca%20href=%22http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/%22%3Ecc%3C\/a%3E\" target=\"_blank\">photo credit<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Money<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Number crunching was never (and still is not) my thing but I knew I had to do it. I worked out what income I wanted to achieve at the end of year one and worked backwards. I looked at my start up costs (higher in the first year), running costs and worked out a budget to upgrade my cottage.\u00c2\u00a0 I then set the prices I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d charge per week and projected my monthly income to cover these costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Makeover<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d always had an interest in styling and interiors. But was this enough?\u00c2\u00a0 So I embarked on a home staging and styling course.\u00c2\u00a0 This taught me the basic rules of interior design but more importantly it taught me what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s important when it comes to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153staging\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a holiday home.\u00c2\u00a0 And in particular where to spend money and where not!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.directholidaycottages.com\/cottage-blog\/files\/2015\/01\/ID-1515-Spring-Cottage-luxury-home-lounge-lge-575.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-394\" title=\"Spring-Cottage-luxury home lounge\" src=\"http:\/\/www.directholidaycottages.com\/cottage-blog\/files\/2015\/01\/ID-1515-Spring-Cottage-luxury-home-lounge-lge-575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Marketing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no point having an amazing cottage if no-one knew about it. \u00c2\u00a0I knew nothing about websites or social media, but in the past 8 years I feel I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve become a bit of a social media pundit.\u00c2\u00a0 I know how to use it to bring in the bookings. \u00c2\u00a0I also taught myself to design and build my own cottage website in WordPress which I am rather proud of (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.luxuryspringcottageyorkshire.co.uk\/\">www.luxuryspringcottageyorkshire.co.uk<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Moving Forwards<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since creating the holiday home (and the income) I set out to create, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been working with other holiday home owners, coaching and helping them to make more money from their holiday home through my business &#8211; The Business of Holiday Rental (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebusinessofholidayrental.com\/\">www.thebusinessofholidayrental.com<\/a>).
